Blue Mountains Health Trust was established in 2002 to promote the health and well-being of the people who live in the Blue Mountains local Government region.
The Trust has three purposes. It helps people who have an illness or disability and who have needs which are not covered by existing Government funding. This can include the funding of special equipment, treatment or services or help in managing an illness or disability.
The Trust also provides funds to local people to help with health and medicine-related study and to promote medical research.
The Blue Mountains Health Trust was established by Leura's Mary Hammon in 2002. Mary had a love of the Blue Mountains having lived here since she was five years old.
Mary married Harry Hammon who was born in Katoomba in 1911. Harry was regarded as the "father" of tourism in the Blue Mountains, owning and operating Katoomba's Scenic Railway (now known as Scenic World), for almost 55 years.
Scenic World is an attraction which draws millions of people to the local area and Mary was Harry's constant source of support and strength through his life and work. He died in August 2000.
Three requirements must be met by applicants for funding under the guidelines of the Blue Mountains Health Trust.
The application must be for an item or service which:
The item or service must relate to the residents of the Blue Mountains, or have in some other way, a tangible connection to the Blue Mountains local Government area.
The item or service must not receive State or Federal Government funding.
Scholarships of $6000 for the study of health and medicine-related projects are awarded over a three-year period. Special guidelines apply.
