"I needed to buy some text books specific to my subject area." They included books on male sexual health and concepts of masculinity.

"Some of these were unique books, and some were not available in libraries," he said.

"I am married with three children and trying to pay a mortgage and study at the same time. Books are not cheap and I was thrilled to be offered $500.

"I managed to squeeze eight text books out of it," Nathan said.

Nathan also works as a nurse and being able to buy the books has meant less travel to Camperdown to spend time in the University library. It means more time for family and study.

Nathan plans a career in research.

"I want to be able to make a difference to people with intellectual disabilities by contributing to research," Nathan said.
